There are 50 different airports possible for free stopovers on AAdvantage All-Partner Awards

Back in 2009, American Airlines’ AAdvantage program introduced one-way awards which was a great feature addition to an already fantastic award program. Unfortunately, with this benefit, AAdvantage did away with stopovers for award travel with one exception. You can still take a stopover at a North American gateway city when traveling internationally. Fortunately, for international awards on all-partner AAdvantage awards, North America includes Hawaii, Canada, US49, Caribbean, Mexico, Bahamas and Bermuda.

Stopovers:

Not allowed for travel wholly within North America

Allowed between North America and Europe, India, Asia, or Central / South America as defined below: One stopover is permitted only at the North American Gateway city on awards between North America and Europe, India, Middle East, Asia, Central America, South America, Pacific and Africa in either direction.

A North American Gateway city is defined as the city where a direct flight (even if with stops, as long as it has one flight number and is sold as one segment) leaves from or arrives into North America as defined above.

There are 24 Airlines (listed below) that participate in AAdvantage award redemption out of which 17 Airlines serve internationally to/from at least one of the North American Gateway cities.

  1. American Airlines
  2. British Airways
  3. Cathay Pacific
  4. Finnair
  5. Iberia
  6. Japan Airlines
  7. LAN Airlines
  8. Malév Hungarian Airlines
  9. Mexicana
  10. Qantas Airways
  11. Royal Jordanian Airlines
  12. S7 Airlines
  13. airberlin
  14. Air Pacific
  15. Air Tahiti Nui
  16. Alaska Airlines/Horizon Air
  17. Cape Air
  18. EL AL
  19. Etihad Airways
  20. GOL
  21. Gulf Air
  22. Hawaiian Airlines
  23. Jet Airways
  24. Kingfisher

So, I have compiled a list of possible North American stopovers destinations that can come handy when planning an award trip with a built-in stopover. This stopover feature if used creatively can lead to a lot of savings while opti-maxi-mizing your miles. This is especially true for AAdvantage All Partner Awards. This list also shows the valid destination for each of the 17 Airlines to/from each of these North American Gateway cities which further help readers in their planning.
