Earn as many AA miles as you can before Lifetime Elite Program changes December 1, 2011

Update on 10/9/2011: Since the time this blog post was originally published, Citi has pulled these credit card signup offers. The links in the post are no longer active. New posts with current best offers on the AA cards will be published soon – wtahc out for them.

——————————————————————————————-

As noted in one of the previous posts, beginning December 1, 2011, AA will be updating its system to include only the Elite Qualifying Miles toward the life elite status of its frequent flyer program. Until November 30, 2011, all the miles earned regardless the source will be included in the lifetime status counter. So go ahead and earn as many AA miles as you can, from any source until that date which will make it that much easier to earn lifetime status in future.

You need to earn 1 million miles for lifetime Gold AAdvantage Status and 2 million miles for lifetime Platinum AAdvantage status. Thus, lets say, if you are currently at 500,000 earned miles with AA, you have about 2 more months to get as close to 1 million and possibly 2 million miles. This would ease the pain to inch forward after December 1. You can take advantage of BankDirect offers and AA credit card signup bonuses. Currently, it possible to earn upto 150K and possibly 225K miles just from credit card signup bonuses.

Please note that earned miles do not have to be currently in your account. It just means all the miles that you have earned so far regardless of whether you have used them, not used them or have let them expire.

Some current credit card sign up bonuses:

75,000 AA Visa Credit Card from Citibank. Earn 75,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles after $1500 in purchases within the first 6 months of card membership. Annual fee is waived for the first 12 months after which it will $85 per year.

75,000 AA American Express Credit Card from Citibank. Earn 75,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles after $4000 in purchases within the first 6 months of card membership. Annual fee is waived for the first 12 months after which it will $85 per year.

Remember, if you have not been a card holder in the past, you can take advanatge of both these offers by signing up for them at the same time. In order to earn maximum bonus, apply for both.

Also note that there is also a AAdvantage Business Visa Credit Card which has a 75,000 AA miles bonus as well. Earns you 75,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles after $4000 in purchases within the first 6 months of card membership. Annual fee is waived for the first 12 months after which it will $75 per year.

Just apply for both the cards back-to-back.
